At the 2024 Aleksanteri Conference “Resisting Authoritarianism in Eurasia: Civil Society and New Solidarities”, scholars will examine political transformations across Eurasia, focusing on the roles of political actors, institutions, and civil society in contexts of authoritarianism and resistance. The conference will address both domestic developments within authoritarian regimes and the responses of democratic societies, including the complex challenges involved in defending human rights and political freedoms under conditions of escalating conflict and repression.
A dedicated session will be presented by Gwendolyn Sasse, Director of ZOiS and Einstein Professor at Humboldt University of Berlin. Her contribution will explore the implications of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for global democracy and the international order, situating the war within broader debates on authoritarianism, resistance, and international solidarity.
